An idea over organic agriculture

Their Western farm practiced shows you Xia Hongfang ( exact ) in order to habitus baby plants in addition to the establish organic ingredients inside the man ' s 7, 000 rectangle - meter farm roof, which your keep up housing costs through the navy anxious to great - computer farming for moisten Ningbo ' s reliance on the foreign trade for small basically successful public goods. SHANGHAI - Look-see pursuing you see, the pros and cons coming from the yuan swap tribute in are a great costume appellation sign not to mention exporter into Ningbo, Xia Hongfang spends unbounded majority of the twist of his patience business hours examining the moisture content in addition to harsh associated with terrain acceptance your computer.

Xia lacks the pleasure to drop out the man ' s wardrobe manufacturing unit in the lively locality on the agency with Zhejiang province. In Addition the boy ' s fascination features unambiguously now use precisely what the dog telephone a far more " eco friendly " web business - farming.

Biodynamic Vs Organic In Farming, Agriculture, And Food Production Yield And Resilience

This article explores the distinction between organic and biodynamic agriculture. Most people are more familiar with the term " organic ", when practicable to food or farming, as this term has entered the mainstream. The term " biodynamic " is less familiar, although it is most familiar in the area of wine. Both of these systems of farming aim to nurture sustainability by reducing the use of synthetic, chemical inputs which can potentially be harmful to the environment and to human health. However, as this article explains below, biodynamic agriculture goes a lot likewise than organics towards achieving this objective.

Both organic and biodynamic have certification systems:

Biodynamic certification is carried out primarily through a single disposal, called Demeter International, an umbrella management that has part organizations in the individual countries where certification is carried out. Through the certification is spring by a single system, biodynamic certification is more standardized globally than organic certification.

Organic certification is run by a variety of different agencies. In most industrialized countries, including the U. S., Canada, the European Union, and Japan, the organic label is defined and regulated by the government. In other countries, organic certification can be carried out by non - profit organizations. Because there are different certifying agencies in different countries, the standards for organic certification differ. However, there are still some basic similarities in common between these different systems.

Biodynamic goes above and beyond organic certification:

The core idea of organic certification boils down to one idea: avoiding the use of synthetic chemical inputs, which can include herbicides, pesticides, and synthetic fertilizers like ammonia - or nitrate - based fertilizers. In this respect, organic agriculture is defined more in the negative than the positive sense: organic certification specifies what a farmer cannot do, but does less in terms of specifying good or healthy approaches to agriculture. Because organic certification does not specify much more than some restrictions on what farmers cannot do, there are many different ways of realizing organic farming.

Some organic farms stick to the letter of organic certification, following all the requirements and rules, but while maintaining the same fundamental approach of industrialized agriculture, using mass - production of crops in large monocultures, and applying fertilizers and herbicides or pesticides as one does in modern industrial farming, with the only change being the use of mixtures allowed under the organic certification systems. The gains of this sort of approach, from a sustainability standpoint, are minimal.

Biodynamic agriculture, on the other hand, takes a more holistic approach. In biodynamic agriculture, the farm is viewed as an ecosystem. Biodynamics, like organics, avoids chemical treatments, but goes even farther, promoting decentralization of production, using cover crops, crop rotation, livestock manure, composting, and open pollination combined with seed saving Each of these practices provides benefits in terms of sustainability, both creating a more positive environmental impact, and increasing the resilience of the farming operation.

The effects and yield of biodynamic agriculture vs conventional organic farming:

There are not many studies comparing biodynamic agriculture to organic - certified factory farming. However, there is a lot of research comparing biodynamic farming to conventional ( non - organic ) farming, and this research seems to find a common trend, which is that biodynamic farming results in slightly lower crop yields, but greatly increased soil quality and lessened environmental impact. Furthermore, biodynamic operations tend to be much more resilient to disturbances, such as changing environmental conditions or unusual weather or climate fluctuations. This is likely due to the use of ecological principles such as diversification and use of open - pollination and seed saving. And in the case of biodynamic wine, a specific topic that has been studied more, there is some evidence that the biodynamic practices result in greater quality of the grapes.

In summary:

Biodynamic agriculture goes above and beyond organic agriculture in embracing ecological principles. Biodynamic certification is more standardized than organic certification. Biodynamic farming results in lower crop yields, but greater resilience in the face of changing conditions, and a more positive impact on the environment.

Certified Organic Skin Care Tips

This is the unrivaled way to lock up you purchase straight and totally natural and organic skin care products.

# 1: Learn To Read Product Labels

Be aware of the Rule Of Thirds:

The top questioning of the ingredients classify regularly lists the ingredients that hold around 90 - 98 % of the product. Most of this is generally water. Read on to find out why this matters!

The middle poll regularly represents approximately 5 - 8 % of the product.

The bottom wringer represents around 1 - 3 %.

# 2: Natural skin care is not always natural.

There are two definitions of the world natural.

The dictionary stuff: " Existing in or, formed by, nature ".

The cosmetic industry explanation: " Component ingredient derived from a natural substance ".

Manufacturers commonly use the world natural on labels to deceive consumers. For paragon, " Cocamide - DEA derived from coconut oil ".

Cocamide - DEA may well be from coconut oil, but a synthetic chemical called diethanolamine is used in the extraction process. It is confessed to cause cancer. An ingredient is not really natural if it has been distilled in this way.

# 3: Organic doesnt mean what you think.

An organic certification on a product label is the only way to guarantee the integrity of a product. The definition of certified organic is as follows:

" An independent third party guarantee of an organic claim ".

Always look for a logo that guarantees the products integrity.

Certified organic products must contain a minimum of 95 % organic ingredients excluding water and salt / minerals, with a small allowance for natural, non - organic ingredients that must comply with very stringent processing criteria.

There are two definitions of organic:

Organic chemistry is concerned with substances that contain carbon. Carbon is present in all living things. Legally, the cosmetics industry is allowed to label any product that contains carbon as organic. So if it contains petrol, it is organic.

Methylparaben is derived from petrochemicals, which are derived from crude oil, which is derived from living matter. It is a widely used preservative in organic skin care products such as body creams, body wash and deodorants:

So effectively methylparaben can legally be labelled as organic. Now, it is worth noting that a recent study reported traces of methylparaben in human breast cancer tumours.

The second definition of organic is, " The sustainable system of agriculture that uses natural substances & methods to create healthy nutrient rich and fertile soils "

# 4: How much water is in the product?

In personal communication with a leading industry expert, I was told what can actually be meant when companies put 73 % Organic on their labels. Basically manufacturers can place a few organic teabags in a vat of water and let them infuse into the water.

Because the water constitutes 70 + percent of the overall product, the manufacturer is allowed to claim that the product is 73 % organic at the top of the label ( remember # 1 in this article? ).

If you removed the water, the actual organic content of those fancy herbal infusions would probably be less than 0. 05 % of the total product.

# 5: Be aware of inconsistent labelling standards

In some countries, ingredients that are not allowed in certified organic foods ARE allowed in certified organic personal care and cosmetic products. This represents a lack of continuity or consistency in labelling standards.

How can food and cosmetics products have the same certified organic logo when ingredients that are allowed personal care and cosmetics are not allowed in food? Remember that if its on your skin, youre drinking it!

# 6: Miracle ingredients dont exist

Vitamin C, vitamin E, coenzyme Q10, active copper and other ingredients may be touted as miracle ingredients. The fact is that there is no miracle ingredient for the skin or hair, just as there is no magic pill for curing illness and disease.

The quality of the skin is a function of feeding the body and skin high quality nutrients over time and keeping the toxin levels of the body as low as possible.

When you use high quality, certified organic products, ALL the ingredients are active. They are ALL beneficial and they all feed the skin.

# 7: If it harms lab animals it will harm you!

If you read books by Dr Sherry Rogers, M. D, you will discover that in order to give a rat cancer or Parkinsons Disease, it is injected with some of the very same chemicals that you will find in your cleverly labelled organic skin care, personal care and cosmetic products.

Certified Organic personal care products and cosmetics 100 % free of ALL synthetic chemicals are available from an Australian Certified Organic company which has passed the stringent USDA Certified Organic standards for food. What this means to you, the consumer, is that the products are guaranteed synthetic chemical free.

Calcium Deficiency in California Organic Agriculture

Calcium is one of the most important plant nutrients. It is essential for pigpen a strong cell membrane structure, and plays important roles in Nitrogen metabolism, protein formation and Potassium uptake. Calcium deficiencies are typically noted in the growth zones equaling as new top and root growth, and at the bottom end of fruits. Blossom End Poppycock ( BER ) in peppers and tomatoes is an select standard of how wasted cell membranes cut fruit quality and economic performance.

Occasion the information is there, it is surprising how uncultured we are about Calcium take out. Although we have a practical compassionate of its role as a soil amendment, eliminating Calcium deficiency in California agriculture can be challenging. Supplying the crop ' s need for Calcium is not as simple as calculating the soil ' s lime requirements. Nutrient availability is dependent upon many factors beyond total supply such as pH, C. E. C., cation saturation on the CEC, water availability and quality to name a few.

There are two factors that may influence Calcium.

Ca / Mg ratio: Calcium availability may be limited by excess Magnesium. Calcium is located directly under Magnesium in the periodic table of elements describing " similar " electro - chemical characteristics, which play a part in the cation exchange dynamics occurring at the interchange sites in the root zone. I personally believe that there is no magical number for Ca / Mg ratio, but that the grower should pay attention to the crop ' s performance and consider the total amount of Mg as a possible source of interference with Ca uptake. In this approach the laboratory - calculated fertilizer recommendations assume an advisory role, secondary the grower ' s experience in reading his crop ' s response.

Calcium is generally immobile once inside the plant. It moves up from the roots through the Xylem in the column of transpiration water moving up to the leaves, while very little moves down through the phloem. Because of this almost unidirectional flow, a steady supply of available Calcium is required to support cell integrity in new plant growth areas, such as shoots, roots and fruits.

Calcium Carbonate is an excellent choice material for supplying calcium for its relative low cost, chemical purity and the low energy required to disassociate it from its carbonate counterpart. The redox reaction occurs in the presence of the weak carboxylic acids exuded by the roots and micro organisms present in the soils. Reducing the particle size increases the surface area available to be oxidized, increasing the Calcium available for plant use.

Contrary to the lab - analysis calculated approach to nutrition, a small amount of micronized Calcium Carbonate can be much more effective in eliminating Calcium deficiency by balancing counter salts than large amounts of coarse grade liming material. The smaller particles can reach the roots by moving with the water mass flow through soil pores, creating a buffer zone around the roots that effectively balances out risk elements, such as Sodium, Aluminum and excess Magnesium. This explains why it economically makes sense to use a smaller amount of a high grade Calcium fertilizer than applying large volumes of lime that cannot reach the root zone until it is eroded by the environment.

India Increasing Use Of Organic Farming

Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar believes that Indias swiftly expanding production of organic agricultural goods can play a critical role in the future of the countys organic food trade.

Organic agriculture in India has fictional good progress during the last six years, Pawar stated pace talking in front of the parliamentary consultative committee for his ministry on Wednesday. With a combined effect of farmers efforts, NGOs work, government interventions and market forces, Indian organic agriculture has reached a stage where it can play a significant role not only in the growing domestic market, but also in global organic food trade.

Pawar said his ministry is promoting and spreading organic farming throughout the country with a variety of state - funded projects like the National Horticulture Mission, the National Project on Organic Farming, the Technology Mission for the Northeast and Rastriya Krishi Vikas Yojana.

In India, as against 42, 000 hectares under certified organic farming during the 2003 - 04, initial estimates for 2009 - 10 indicate organic agriculture under certification has grown to 1. 05 million hectares. Out of this, nearly 750, 000 hectares are fully certified while the remaining 300, 000 hectares are under various stages of conversion.

Pawar believes that organic farming is an ideal option for raid - fed, marginal land, and hilly areas and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research has initiated an All India Network Project on organic farming to scientifically test and prove the most effective methodologies in organic farming.

Promotion of organic farming will not only ensure increased availability of organic and biological sources of nutrients, but will also provide technologies and information which help other forms of agriculture in restoring soil health and conservation of resources, the minister said.

In addition to national initiatives in the organic farming field, a collection of state governments have also initiated their own organic farming promotion programs. Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, and Uttarakhand have drafted policies for the promotion of organic farming and, of those, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, and Uttarakhand have declared that they wish to go 100 percent organic in the future.

Local or Organic A False Choice

Also, by expanding the organic market, we may be well quota local farmers. The USDA surveyed farmers ' markets and start up that about a question of farmers selling direct were organic - - local and organic, that is. In comparison, dependable one percent of all American farms practice organic agriculture. So for smaller - scale farmers selling direct, organic food has become a key component of their ego. By bringing more people into the organic fold, through whatever gateway they happened to choose, the pool of consumers considering local food would likely increase notably.

That ' s at head what Jim Crawford, a farmer from south central Pennsylvania believed. His 25 - acre operation, New Morning Farm, works two farmers markets in Washington, D. C., and Jim played a key role in the growth of local foods in the region, having started out as an organic farmer in the 1970s. He told me he worried when Whole Foods opened a supermarket near his farmers ' market location in Washington because he thought he would lose customers. But over time, he noticed, sales kept rising. He thought the supermarket, which stocked a lot of organic produce from California, was actually converting customers to organic food and they in turn were finding their way to his market.

But what about companies that have pursued the organic marketplace without any concern for local food? What about, say, Earthbound Farm, which has grown into the third largest organic brand and the largest organic produce company in the nation, with its bagged salad mixes in three - quarters of all supermarkets? The company fiercely competed with other organic growers who later went out of business; its salad was grown organically but with industrial - scale agriculture; and the trucks that shipped the salad around the country burned through a lot of fossil fuel.

But Earthbound was competing with the likes of Dole, Fresh Express and ReadyPac in the mainstream market to offer consumers an organic choice. It did little for local food ( a saving grace, since it left the market to smaller players ). But Earthbound farmed on 26, 000 acres of certified organic land, which meant that 267, 000 pounds of pesticides and 8. 4 million pounds of chemical fertilizers were being removed from use annually, the company estimated. And as studies repeatedly show, organic farming also saves energy ( since the production of fertilizer and pesticides consumes one - third of the energy used in farming overall ). Earthbound ' s accomplishments should not be ignored - - even if they are anything but local.

Which brings me to a final point: How we shop. Venues like Whole Foods are not fully organic because people are often unwilling to spend more than a small portion of their grocery budget on organic foods. It ' s too expensive. This is one reason why organic food accounts for just two percent of food sales - - one percent if you include eating out. Similarly, local foods, though important, total 1 - 2 percent. So arguing over local or organic is a bit like two people in a room of 100 fighting over who has the more righteous alternative to what the other 98 people are doing. It doesn ' t really matter, because the bigger issue is swaying the majority.

Making Organic Farming Practices Accessible to Filipino Farmers

For an agricultural country that was among the first in South East Asia to explore organic farming, most people would assume that by now the Philippines would be a ruler in organic farming. But sadly, this is not the case.

The Philippine agriculture is highly dependent on collectible and ecologically unsound chemical fertilizers and pesticides.

Hard by excitement the effects of climate change with increasing intensity during the last six to seven years and most especially during the 2009 Typhoon Ondoy when substantial chunks of the Philippine archipelago was devastated by floods, the Philippine government stepped up the implementation of climate change adaptation measures.

Within the catalogue of climate change adaptation measures, the Philippine government presently zeroed in on organic farming as a vital step.

It was unparalleled last year that the Philippines passed the Organic Agriculture Act of 2010, RA 10068, gentle its Implementing Rules and Regulations, and welcome a budget, allocating 2 percent of the Philippine Department of Agriculture ' s funds for organic farming.

Ultimately, despite these most steps towards propagating organic farming practices, indications of not unlike practices supplanting or supine complementing chemical dependent agricultural practices are slow in coming.

On the fresh produce shelves of one of the largest manacles of supermarkets, you will find unbiased two or three brands labeled with claims of being " organically grown " produce. Beyond and frontage of the supermarket, organic produce can only be found in weekend bazaars or in specialty shops scattered around Metro Manila. Few restaurants offer items with organically grown ingredients.

Organic produce, at this stage, is only available to Filipinos with higher than average incomes. This is largely because of the higher price of organically produced foods are sold at but also because of it is not widely available in wet markets.

The Philippine Department of Agriculture under the leadership of Secretary Proceso Alcala has sought to provide solutions to the price and availability of organic produce to a wider market. First by spurring the adoption of organic farming practices with the help of NGOs. Second by funding a the construction of 2, 600 organic fertilizer production plants all over the country.

The second step seems to be the more crucial one.

Without good quality organic fertilizer to enhance the productivity of their farms, organic farming may be a losing proposition for most farmers.

To solve this problem, Alcala recently announced that the Department of Agriculture would be spending P2. 6 Billion pesos in converting 2, 600 existing composting facilities into Japanese - modeled organic fertilizer production plants.

The proposed conversion of existing compost facilities comes with a price tag of P1 million per facility. The proposed organic fertilizer production plants will be equipped drying equipment, carbonizing machine, shredding and mixing machine, grinders and millers, and enhanced transport system through conveyor belts.

Now, just given the characteristics of the proposed organic fertilizer production plant, it is already apparent that the plants are highly - capital intensive and perhaps unnecessarily backward integrated.

Compared to a similar but lower costing and locally available model for organic fertilizer production, the P1 Million per organic fertilizer production will seem like a gargantuan expense.

The Agricultural Inoculant Corporation has been in the business of converting organic waste into fertilizer for a number of years. The efficacy of its microbial rapid composting agent has already undergone pilot testing in 18 sites all over the country and was supervised by the Philippine Department of Agriculture ' s Bureau of Agricultural Research.

In a project study which intends to promote the adoption of organic fertilizer production among Filipino farmers, the AIC presented a system to produce low cost organic fertilizer.

The project study assumes that the main implementor of the organic waste to organic fertilizer conversion would be farmer - entrepreneurs who have limited financial capital to invest in organic fertilizer production.

The total cost of the project is estimated at P40, 000 pesos or about $1, 000. Other equipment needed for drying, chopping, composting, and storage can be sourced from what is already available in the farm. Additional inputs such as carbonized rice hulls and chicken manure can also be sourced at a lower cost. If done within the farm premises, the cost of transporting materials will be negligible.

In comparison to the Department of Agriculture ' s organic fertilizer production plants, the AIC system for producing organic fertilizer also has the advantage of a direct transfer of technology and emphasizes self - sufficiency among Filipino farmers. As far as ingraining the organic farming practices is concerned, the AIC system provides the farmer, not only a way to reduce the cost of his inputs but also provides him with an additional source of income.

With a total cost of just P40, 000 or about $1, 000 dollars, the AIC system can enable a Filipino farmer to produce as much as 2, 250 bags of organic fertilizer within an 8 month period - - typically the length of the planting season cycles of most Filipino farms. AIC estimates the cost of production per bag at P100. 00 and projects that each back can be sold at a retail price of P250. 00 per bag. At 2, 250 bags, the farmer can realize a gross revenue of P562, 500 and a profit of P337, 500.

Compared to the Department of Agriculture ' s model which basically just ensures that farmers will continue to be buyers of farm inputs, the AIC system allows them to supplement their own fertilizer needs as well as realize income off - season from the sale of organic fertilizer.

Organic Coffee Best Antioxidant Benefits

Organic products are increasingly popular with coffee and food products at a time. Many customers are eating organic on a daily basis, it would make sense that coffee is one of the best choices. One of the main reasons why people have the laxity of organic products being they are guarded for the environment and does not use chemical pesticides. This is precisely why it is important to know what you need to know about drinking a cup of joe course!

One of the main benefits of drinking organic coffee is due to the environment. The working methods of organic agriculture to maintain soil fertility and crops are grown without toxic pesticides or fertilizers serious. Another great advantage that should not be overlooked is that the organic coffee is full of nutrients and vitamins. When you drink coffee that is certified 100 % organic, offering a variety of antioxidants. One of the main benefits of drinking coffee that is full of antioxidants that may protect cells against damage to prevent disease and premature aging. If you want the best anti - oxidant benefits, without the use of pesticides, choose organic java every time!

Organic Gardening 101 Principles of Sustainable Agriculture

In assembling, " organic " defines a compound that contains carbon as an element. Organic compounds were believed to be derived single from living organisms, both plant and animal. However, religious to World War II, organic compounds were also successfully synthesized in laboratories without coming from living organisms. To a chemist, an organic compound containing carbon can be either a ) derived from living organisms or b ) synthesized in the lab. In the horticultural world, though, " organic " refers to a method of sustainable agriculture that includes the practice of not applying synthetic fertilizers or pesticides to the soil or to plants. Well, wait a minute - if organic compounds can be either life - based or synthetic - based, why do we cite to " organic gardening " as the absence of synthetic measures? Hmm, this could be confusing... but let ' s simplify.

In 1940, Lord Northbourne is credited for first using the term " organic farming " in his book " Look to the Land ". It is generally accepted that his term was philosophically based, with the implied meaning of interdependency of living things for other living things. Regardless of his original intention, the term " organic farming " has been around ever since. It is with its commonly accepted usage with which we will address some gardening practices.

Let ' s start with an explanation of a term that was mentioned above - " sustainable agriculture ". This term is often used in conjunction with organic gardening definitions. The goal of sustainable agriculture is to replenish the soil as its nutrients are depleted so that the soil and its plantings become self - sustaining. It is this principle of building the soil that is the foundation to fundamentals of organic gardening; i. e., build your soil stronger and the soil will build your plants stronger. These stronger plants can better withstand drought, disease, and insect damage.

Soil building, through the addition of organic amendments, improves soil tilth ( or the overall condition of the soil ). This improvement helps to prevent soil compaction by providing a favorable environment for earthworms and by increasing microbial activity. If the notion of lots of creepy - crawly earthworms isn ' t exactly your cup of tea, consider this: earthworms help to loosen the soil, which facilitates movement of air and water into the soil, plus they add nutritive value to the soil through their castings. What are " castings "? Pure gold in gardeners ' terms, castings are simply worm poop. These castings provide a fabulous source of organic nutrients that will be of great benefit to your plantings.

Composting is another fundamental principle of organic gardening, and another component of soil building. By simply relocating kitchen scraps ( except for meat products ); for example, vegetable peelings, eggshells, coffee grounds, etc., into a compost bin, or a compost pile, a gardener will be rewarded with lots of humus ( decayed plant waste ) to recycle into the garden. Other good additions to the compost pile are leaves and grass clippings. Keep the pile moist, but not soggy, and turn it or mix it from time to time.

If you set a goal to begin building your soil so that it will better sustain your plantings, you are on your way to practicing principles of organic gardening. When you are ready to advance your organic gardening skills, it will be time to implement additional measures. Beyond composting and using worm castings for your garden, planting cover crops, practicing crop rotation, and conservation tillage are other methods that serious organic gardeners use. All these fundamentals of organic gardening will benefit your own backyard garden and you will grow healthy vegetables for your family.

Organic Agriculture - The Way to Progress

Seeing our society from the past centuries up to the present, it is very much evident that there are several developments that took plant. Due to these developments, life has become complicated. As a denouement of count, people have overlooked the problems brought about by developments through of the glittering gold and silver that supposed developments overture.

Among the problems that have been overlooked for the past decades are the environmental problems which are becoming worse as the years passed by. Several environmental problems which we are unsimilar right now are the results of agricultural malpractices due to need of education.

Among the environmental problems is the planate destruction of the soil in that of excessive use of inorganic fertilizers which has resulted to soil infertility. An evidence to plead this fact is the gradual extinction of savage plants which were in the past, uncolored sprout from the soil without human interventions. Another problem is the contamination of the water source and air because of excessive use of pesticides and other chemicals which are being used to spray the plants. As a result, clean water are becoming lesser which also contribute to the spread of communicable diseases. One thing more, is the increasing number of pests and diseases to both plants and animals and even humans. Because of all these problems, some people from the agricultural industry propose organic agriculture believing that this would at least lessen these problems.

Organic agriculture is a holistic production management that discourages the use of synthetic pesticides, fertilizers and genetically modified organisms. Purposively, it would contribute to the lessening of air soil and water pollutions, and maximizes the health of the interdependent communities of plants animals and humans. This means that there should be a balance in the environment whereby none of these living organisms would out number the other. This is because through organic agriculture, the lives of the beneficial micro - organisms are preserved to avoid the flourishing of pests and diseases that destroy the said interdependent communities. They are called interdependent communities because as the word " interdependent " imply, plants, animals and humans rely on each other in order to survive. Plants give off oxygen and food to humans and animals. On the other hand, animals and humans give off carbon dioxide and waste products for the plants to use in food processing or photosynthesis. Another thing to be given attention is the balance number of preys and predators in the environment. In other words the food chain cycle should not be disturbed because if that will happen there ' ll be a dominance of one population which results to food scarcity for the other population. For instance, if the farmers continuously use synthetic pesticides, small organisms will be killed which results to growing number of pests because no other organisms that would eat them. Because of this, plants that serve as the food for humans and animals will be destroyed by these pests. That is why organic agriculture is said to be the solution for food scarcity in the future to come.

For organic agriculture to come in reality, farmers should be educated about the proper practices in agriculture. In fact, in the Philippines, there are certain radio programs and television programs allotted for the promotion of organic agriculture. Other than that, seminars are also conducted by experts in agriculture. There are also cooperatives that are being established to cater to the needs and address the problems of the farmers. Other than that are the various government programs that are implemented to different regions of the country. But most importantly is the cooperative effort among the sectors in the society in promoting and supporting the implementation of organic agriculture practices. Among the sectors in the society that should exert more effort is the education sector with the facilitation of educational institutions especially with State universities or any university that offers agricultural courses.

Organic Food As a Fast - Growing Segment of US Agriculture

Lately organic food is gaining deference, the trend being stable for at leading five years. The recent research conducted by the Food Marketing Institute provides proof that majority of American human race buy organic food at pristine once a month.

This segment of US agriculture shows rapid growth. Onliest in 2007 organic food retailers earned more than 20 billion dollars. The daybook growth of organic dairy industry is estimated to be 18 percent by the year 2010.

Let us have a reconnaissance at the main idea beneath organic food production, i. e. using materials and practices that could improve the ecological balance of natural systems. We cannot be absolutely sure that organic products are free of residues yet there are best practices involved in production that are directed at minimizing pollution from air, soil and water. And organic food production is controlled y strict state and federal standards, too.

Thus mostly people tend to treat organic food as that which is devoid of fertilizers or pesticides. Nonetheless the United States Department of Agriculture ( USDA ) labelled food as organic if it is 95 percent pure.

Sometimes products contain only 70 percent of organic materials or even less. This kind of food cannot be called organic but it can be labelled " made with organic ingredients ". Thus you should differentiate between these forms of products at the supermarket.

De facto non - organic practices in the USA release more than one billion pounds of pesticides. The USDA ' s tests prove that organic products contain three or four times less pesticide residues than in conventionally produced fruits and vegetables.

And conventional practices in agriculture can result in water contamination. According to Environmental Working Group ' s research that was conducted back in 1955 across the Corn Belt, in Louisiana and Maryland, scientists concluded that tap water pesticide contamination was at health risk levels. The solution was in organic farming methods, as well as developing the soil.

It is important to notice that the term organic has another meaning than organic. Sometimes food producers seeking higher sales and good reputation make tricks by labelling their food as natural as it does not comply to organic food standards.

The Food and Drug Administration ( FDA ) allows using the term natural for food that does not contain any added colourings, artificial ingredients or synthetic substances.

That is why more and more non - organic producers try to present their products as good for health and thus, in 2008, about one third of all new US food and beverage products were labelled with the word " natural ".

The Organic Farming Philosophy Of The Nutrilite Farms

NUTRILITE is the exclusive global vitamin and mineral trade name to grow, pluck and process plants on their own certified organic farms. Wherever NUTRILITE grow the ingredients used in NUTRILITE products, the crops are grown in accord with nature.

NUTRILITE avoids the use of synthetic pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers.

NUTRILITE replenishes the soil, rather than depleting it.

NUTRILITE uses natural, environmentally - friendly methods to control weeds, insects, and other harmful predators.

A requirement of all the farms supplying botanical materials span to the NUTRICERT farm certification program ensuring that these farms leash to NUTRILITE ' s own organic farming philosophy, guided by sustainable, organic principles. The main principles of the NUTRICERT program hold:

Crop and increase diversity, including vertical diversity of herbs, trees, and bushes; and integration of animal husbandry, beneficial insects, and microorganisms.

Healthy soil - crib practices, not unlike as the use of compost, beneficial soil microorganisms, erosion control, and scant use of mineral fertilizers.

No soil or environmental contamination, cognate as using genetically modified organisms. The idea is to use undocked pest management and protect the farms from potential sources of contamination from adjoining farms.

In - depth quality control standards, including proper documentation of farm inputs, traceability of crop sources, written plans to avoid contamination and control pests, and a quality assurance program for farm products sold.

Building a healthy social environment around the farm, providing farm employees with the opportunity for personal development, including education and training.

By owning and maintaining control over their own NUTRILITE farms, NUTRILITE can ensure that our supplements contain only high quality ingredients.

NUTRILITE ' s organic farming operations are truly multinational, with over 6, 400 acres in California, Washington State, Mexico, and Brazil.

Agricultural Research Farm - California - USA

NUTRILITE ' s Agricultural Research Farm in Lakeview, California, is the primary location where NUTRILITE farm researchers work to improve existing NUTRILITE products as well as identify nutrients and active ingredients for new products and the development of organic farming practices.

45 hectares ( 111 acres )

Located on a prehistoric lake bed, which accumulated nutrient - rich sediment, contributing to the fertile topsoil.

Primary crops: pomegranates, rosemary, and many test crops.

By feeding the soil with compost and by using carefully tested farming practices, NUTRILITE creates a better soil structure supplying crops with a vast array of nutrients.

At NUTRILITE ' s Agricultural Research Farm in Lakeview, local volunteers from the community help raise organic vegetables for their own use. In addition, the NUTRILITE Agricultural Research Farm organizes programs with local schools, bringing area students to the farm to grow crops as a school project each year.

Trout Lake Farm - Washington State - USA

Trout Lake Farm is the largest certified organic herb farm in North America. Located in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains, the farm ' s irrigation is provided by the White Salmon River, fed by glaciers from the mountains.

283 hectares ( 700 acres )

The Trout Lake valley where the farm is located is all organic there is no conventional farming in the valley and the surrounding mountains help keep out pollution and contaminants.

Primary crops: Echinacea purpurea, St. John ' s wort, horseradish, white kidney beans, dandelions, Echinacea angustifolia, Valerian, peppermint, nettles, and many others.

At Trout Lake Farm, the temperature, sunlight, and moisture levels change from year to year at different altitudes in the valley, so the farm must be carefully managed to ensure consistent yields of its many crops.

The NUTRILITE farm supports many local community projects, including the Trout Lake Fair, the local youth association baseball league, the area arts council, and the local public schools.

Rancho El Petacal - Jalisco - Mexico

Rancho El Petacal, located in southwestern Mexico, has the ideal growing climate with plenty of sunshine and rainfall the perfect conditions for growing nutrient - rich plants for existing NUTRILITE products, and for growing test plots for research.

All 566 hectares ( 1, 400 acres ) are certified 100 % organic.

The farm is a major source of jobs for the small community of El Petacal.

Primary crops: lemons, red grapefruit, mandarin oranges, watercress, parsley, spinach, garlic, alfalfa.

NUTRILITE ' s commitment to sustainability goes beyond the edge of the fields at Rancho El Petacal. NUTRILITE ' s reforestation programs have helped increase biodiversity and maintain the natural equilibrium of the area.

The NUTRILITE farm at Rancho El Petacal runs a Cultural and Education Support Center at the farm. Here NUTRILITE provides basic education on nutrition and ecology as well as help with local projects, such as building a new church in the community.

Fazenda Nutriorganica - Ubajara - Brazil

Fazenda Nutriorganica is the largest NUTRILITE farm. The farm produces acerola cherries year - round. Over 300 head of cattle on the farm provide natural fertilizer for the crops.

All 1, 660 hectares ( 4, 100 acres ) are certified 100 % organic.

Acerola cherries provide 100 % of our need for the natural ascorbic acid ( Vitamin C ) used in NUTRILITE products.

Primary crops: Acerola cherries, coconuts, passion fruit, guava, and cashews.

Most plant pest and disease problems are solved preventively by providing balanced organic nutrients to ensure strong, healthy growth.

Fazenda Nutriorganica was formerly a desolate, undeveloped tract of land. It is now a beacon of productive work, learning, and professional and personal development. A reforestation project along the banks of the nearby Jaburu River, organized by NUTRILITE, is now underway.

My next article entitled " The NUTRILITE Manufacturing Process Never Compromises on Quality " will show their standards of quality in manufacturing are as much a part of their company culture as their natural farming practices.

See you on the Beaches of the World,

What Next For The Organic Industry

Apart from North America, by far the greatest consumers of organic produce are European countries in Scandinavia, the Netherlands and Germany. Organic cotton is growing strongly, with sales rising 63 % in the US to $3. 2 billion in 2008. This trend has been conspicuously helped by the rise in exaltation of social standards like Fairtrade attached to cotton and textiles, which often have elements of organic production. Recent figures from the International Federationof Organic Agriculture Movement ( IFOAM ) indicate the biggest organic producers, based on hectares of land used for livestock, dairy farming and crops, are Australia, Argentina and Brazil. On a national prone, the highest proportion of agricultural land under organic management is in Austria ( 13. 4 % ) and Switzerland ( 11 % ).

Certification serves to regulate and forward the sale of organic products. It assures product quality and prevents falsification it also helps forward organic produce. As the market for organic food and other products grows and becomes mainstream, consumers rely on catechism party certification to identify products. In some countries, certification is awarded at government level and the commercial use of the descriptive term organic is restricted legally. This is the situation in the US, EU and Japan where the term may only be used by certified producers.

The US governments National Organic Program distinguishes three categories of organic: 100 % Organic, Organic ( contains at least 95 % organic ingredients ) or made with organic ingredients ( at least 70 % ). Only products in the first two groups are eligible to carry the USDA Organic Seal.

The relevant EU standard is the EU - Eco - regulation ( 1992 ). This is used as a basis for a number of standards and implemented by certification bodies at a national level. Non - EU countries, both in Europe and globally, have widely adopted the European certification regulations for organic food in order to increase export chances to EU countries.

There are many organic standards in use globally most derived from the national organic guidelines of the larger markets described above. The International Federationof Agriculture Movements ( IFOAM ) is an umbrella organization with more than 750 members in more than 100 countries. IFOAM offers an Organic Guarantee System which enables organic certifiers to become " IFOAM Accredited " and for their certified operators to label products with the prestigious IFOAM Seal next to the logo of their IFOAM accredited certifier. Other similar large membership organizations are the Organic Crop Improvement Association ( OCIA ) and Ecocert.

In Japan, the Japanese Agricultural Standard ( JAS ) is administered by the countrys Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and certification to this standard can be awarded by international organizations. Chinas Organic Food Development Center ( OFDC ) provides an IFOAM Accredited organic certification service to the National Organic Product Standard of China and OFDC Organic Certification Standard.

While the organic sector may have suffered some setbacks in the wake of the 2007 - 2009 global recession and in the wake of recent consumer skepticism it is diversifying, clarifying its message and going more global. For example, a hugely growing segment is organic cotton which has emerged as a result of the Wests desire for eco - fashion and environmentally aware procurement in highly visible consumer segments. The sector is now worth 40 billion USD per year and traditional low cost producer India is hopingfor a large slice of this from almost a zero production base at present. Coffee, driven by the blockbuster success of Fairtrade, is also a hugely growing organic market. In short, the global organic markets will have to rely less on claims of health benefits and more on social and environmental factors. They will also need to address the price differential between organic and non - organic produce.

Whats Wrong with Organic Food and Organic Agriculture

Criticism of organic food and organic agriculture includes the following:

Organic food is admired

Unfortunately, at the moment retailers are charging artificially high prices. I was in Tesco last lifetime which is a exceptional happening as I shop locally where possible, and I almost died when I proverb the prices being steamed up for organic yogurt and eggs compared to the non - organic brands. I understand that we have to pay more for organic produce for there are more crop failures due to the gospel that the farmers cannot use pesticides, but what is an acceptable degree and does this vary from product to product. Should organic fish be 10 percent more worthwhile than non organic fish and vegetables 20 per cent etc? If we have to remuneration more for crop failures how does this work with distilled food that uses less fresh ingredients and higher volumes? Should we still have to recompense a premium or are they lawful jumping on the band wagon and making us stipend higher prices? At the moment most organic items are plenty highly priced to be affordable to most people. Moreover, many hold forth that there is not enough evidence that supports the benefits of eating organic food to warrant the additional cost. For example its difficult to quantify; can organic potatoes be 10 % better for us, should we then pay an extra 10 % on the price? or are we paying for a lifestyle choice? Is this not the same as any branded clothes, toiletries, cars? We could buy cheaper clothes, toiletires or cars as they all do the same as dearer branded ones yet we choose them because it makes us feel better and due to peer pressure and advertising.

Organic Food Safety and Benefits

There is evidence that organic farms are more sustainable and environmentally sound, among other benefits. These claims, however, are subject to dispute and are not settled among scientists. Another contentious issue surrounding organic produce is the fact that nearly 70 per cent of produce sold in UK supermarkets is imported, generating thousands of food miles to get to its destination and causing damage to the environment.

Often organic food produced in England is sent from one side of the country to the distribution warehouse at the other side, only to be sent back again to the Supermarket. One supermarket has been run a pilot where the farmer and his tractor deliver the organic produce to the supermarket direct. Now that is progress!

Non organic food does contain pesticides of varying amount. Many toxicologists and scientists consider the amount to be so low as to have no effect on the consumer. For example, have you fallen ill the past due to the chemicals in your food? I doubt it! Only those that have an allergic reaction or eat vast quantities of the same food may do so. Food is not allowed to be sold by law that is unsafe.

In todays society, it is virtually impossible to grow produce pestivide free and even organically grown foods do not claim to be completely free of chemical residues. Presticides are carried in the air and rivers. Non GM crops around the world have been found to contain Genetically Modified seedlings as these have been carried in the air from GM farms miles away.

Organic food has " sold out "

Organic food began as a small movement decades ago with gardeners and farmers rejecting the use of conventional non organic practices. With the growth of the Organic food market now outpacing much of the food industry many big companies have moved into this market. With these large often multi national companies, and with the creation of a legal certification framework such as the Soil Assocaiton, there is worry that the very definition of organic food will change from what it used to be and become just another mass produced brand which will over time be replaced by another emerging sector.

For example, Heinz is producing an organic version of baked beans and has different ingredients and packaging, it uses 100 % certified organic vine - ripened tomatoes. The label will also reflect an organic quality - - with Heinz traditional red label replaced with a green version. Another difference: the organic version will cost about 50 % more than regular Heinz. Does certified organic vine - ripened tomatoes cost 50 percent more to buy when bought in bulk, I doubt it!

By keeping it small are we not keeping it beautiful and under control?

A final thought - - Organic is more than just a brand, its a way of life!
